Sorry theres no pretty pictures with this post! You’ll have to make do with my angry rambling instead! Today in ‘Clinton Cards’ I saw some pens on the counter for a breast cancer charity so I picked one up to buy it (I’m a charity nut ya see) for £1.99…but then I noticed that it teeeny letters at the bottom, it said only 20p went to the actual charity!!! It had charity stuff emblazoned all over the POS display but NOWHERE was there a notice saying ‘we only give 10% of your money to the charity, the rest goes toward the cost of these oh so expensive roller ball pens’ so I deliberately put it back as I am not giving MY money to the ‘Clinton cards rollerball pen that also cares a little about cancer’ charity!!!
Probably the reason it irritated me so much is because it is to do with cancer. Cancer is something very close to my heart (hopefully not literally!), and I personally donate £5 a month by Direct Debit to Cancer Research UK which is a hugely deserving charity that I have supported for a long time – even when I was a full time student, had quit my job and suspended my site and had NO income I still kept up my standing order to the charity despite numerous people telling me to ‘keep my money’…to do what with it?! So I went without sweets for a month, crisps the next etc – big deal! Even with having no income I still kept up the £5 as it wouldn’t really have getten me very far, however as a regular donation it REALLY does help a charity. The reason I had chosen cancer research is because my mams parents BOTH had cancer…and thankfully both survived it, which I see as being hugely down the developements made by Cancer Research. I started giving my donation not long after my grandma recovered and it felt like such an amazing thing to do, and made me feel so proud.
Then my grandad got cancer again.
It was much more serious this time, and as his health took a battering from having cancer before he wasn’t strong enough for a repeated treatment. However a radical new treatment (called Cryotherapy) was being used in it’s very early stages at three places around the UK – one of which was luckily Sunderland hospital. This cryotherapy was my grandads only option…none of us were keen on the idea at all as the success/ side effects etc had not really been established so it could have been a monumental risk. But he went for it.
It saved his life.
The cancer cells were frozen and eliminated after only one treatment – amazingly. Within weeks his cancerous cell levels were down to that of a ‘normal’ man. Even the hospital couldn’t believe it had gone this well!!! My grandad has his cancer cell levels monitored regularly and they have remained at a steady, safe level. This was purely down to this radical new treatment, partly researched and studied by Cancer Research UK. I was SO glad grandad got better, it really was amazing…and to know that in a very very small way, my money had helped the charity to be where they are, saving the lives of people like my family was such an unbeatable feeling!!
So this is why I shall NOT be buying your pen Clintons!! If I choose, I shall miss out the ‘middle man’ and just give the £1.99 TO THE CHARITY instead of indirectly supporting your beer fund (ok, slight exaggeration…possibly!)!! And I will every single person reading this to do the same – next time you see those funky little charity badges for £1 in Asda, why not donate directly to the charity of your choice. And instead of £1, how about a monthly donation of £1…or £5 like little old me! This £1 will make so much difference, you really wouldn’t believe it possible. And if the worst were to happen in the future, it’d be a horrible feeling to know you could have done more.
So come on everyone! £5 a month!! £1.25 a week! We CAN and WILL make a difference to millions of people around the country, or even around the world – we WILL save lives!!
Thanks for reading
If just one person makes a donation to THEIR charity as a result of this, I’ll be a happy Rachy
Take care,
Rachy
xx
