My blog is now a nut free zone

26 02 2007

I’m sorta bummed out today.

When I was away in York we got Chinese takeaway (I got curry sauce, egg fried rice and chips), and everything was fine. We got it again on a different night (this time I had boiled rice instead of egg fried) and I had a terrible allergic reaction to something in the meal – I know this was a reaction to nuts in it as I’ve had it before. My lips were all swollen, my eyes were swollen and puffy, my skin was itchier than usual, my ears were stinging and my throat felt like it was tickling and scratching and it felt funny trying to breathe, often really difficult to breathe but I didn’t think anything of it. I washed my hands and face, cleaned my teeth and removed and traces of the meal and rested for the night. I wasn’t worried at all as it’s something I’ve always just thought of as an inconvenience so I just sorta waited it out and I was fine a few hours later. I sorta forgot about it really, then I decided it’d be best to know exactly what kinda nuts caused this kind of reaction – I wasn’t sure as when it first happened it was when someone was eating a bag of mixed nuts so I’ve always wondered.

So my mam started to look into it, and found that my symptoms of my ‘tickly’ throat are actually my throat beginning to close. My symptoms are bordering on life threatening, and apparently it’s not uncommon for the symptoms to get more severe.

I’ve looked around the Internet for a home blood testing allergy kit, my brother had one a few years back, but I had no luck – I found one that tests blood for 36 different allergens but it costs nearly £90! And after my holiday I just don’t have it, so I’m gonna have to get an appointment at the docs pretty quickly *sigh*

I know this will make me sound like a total wimp, but I’ve never had a blood test before so I’m nervous about it. I’m ok with needles, it’s just the thought of something actually being extracted from me like that, makes me shudder.

Sorry this post is a little sad and dull. I’m feeling ok really, just scared I’ll need to get one of those epipen thingys. All sorts of thoughts are going through my head now, God I’m such a wuss lol. I’ll phone up the doctors tomorrow to try and get an appointment for Wednesday morning, I’ll keep you all posted. Sorry if I’m not around much for the next little while, just need a little time to myself.

Rachy.

I know what it is like to have something extracted from you, I occasionally have the p**s taken out of me but I found it painless ;-) .

Honestly, i have to have a couple of blood tests a year to check my cholesterol and I dont like it. However, I look the other way when the neelde goes in and all i feel is a little prick (no pun intended). My veins tend to dissappear when I go into the hospital and if they can’t take blood from my arm they take it from the back of my hand and this is a little more painful. I am sure you will be fine though :-)

Glad you are feeling ok now Rachy, Just take it easy over the next few days though.

Rachy, I used to be scared of blood tests too and I promise you it doesn’t hurt at all. When I was pregnant I had blood tests every month plus I went and had acupuncture each week. Now, years later, I’m still having needles stuck in me every couple of weeks because of my Thyroid problem and I feel like a pin cushion sometimes :) … but, I promise you, it is nothing to worry about. xxx Just look away and breathe slowly and before you know it the nurse will say OK all done :) xxx

I had a blood test for the first time a while ago and found it to be no problem whatsoever. It only takes a few minutes and I hardly felt a thing. Just look the other way as it’s being done and you’ve nothing to worry about Rachy.
I’ll be thinking about you even more than I usually do over the coming days and I really hope that it turns out to be nothing more serious than the nut allergy problem that you already know about.
Please keep us informed.

So sorry Rachy that you had such a bad reaction and are now so worried. As the other guys and girls have said, you’ve got to try to say yourself that people have blood tests every day, and I’m sure you’ll cope.

I have an alergy myself with certain types of fish. I don’t know precisiely which type, but I have to be careful, and always have piriton with me just in case of a reaction.

Hopefully the Doctors can sort out what your alergy is, and you can avoid whatever it is. I know it isn’t easy with a nut alergy, as so much contains nuts.
Hugs and kisses, Love Den xxxxxxx

Good luck with your blood test, it’s no problemo…
Most G P’s have a little cupboard the nurse hangs about in…
But it’s all cool anyways…

*hugs Rachy*
I know i;ve already spoken to you about it but take care, and dont fret about the blood test if you can.
I’ve had up to 18 little vials at a time taken when they were testing for my EDS, and if you dont think about it everything is fine :)
IF the nurse is great at her job you wont feel a thing.
If she isnt so great you’ll still only feel a little pinch.
